Malawian Models in glare of publicity at Southern African Fashion week

A shinning gem has been added to Malawi’s modeling industry crown as the country’s models have been selected to participate at this year’s Southern Africa Fashion Week scheduled to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The impending fashion week is a part of the Southern Africa Fashion Conference (SAFC) expected to take place from 30 April to 01 May, 2014. It’s the third season of SAFC and will highlight models from Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania, South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland. SAFC has selected four models from Malawi namely Thembi Zimba, Peggy Mwanguku, Harry Kazembe and Michael Kazembe.

The chosen models, one from Blantyre and three from Lilongwe were also a part of the Malawi Fashion Week 2013.

They went through an audition which was held last week in the capital, where 16 models auditioned. Expressing in an interview, 19-year-old Peggy articulated that it feels great that she was selected to represent Malawi.

Further, she conveyed, “I can’t wait to represent my beautiful country and put Malawi on the map of the fashion industry”. Also, she was looking forward to the event as it will award her with more experience and exposure.

Harry, a designer at Mizu Designs in Lilongwe, expressed that for him it was not less than a dream-come-true to be a part of such an imperative event. He added, “It’s something big and this is an opportunity for me to go big in my career as a model.” Harry, who is strongly inspired by Tyson Beckford and Djimon Hounsou in the modeling world, communicated, “You just never know who might be there and this might be a chance to get scouted.

All in all am looking forward to having fun.” Not to mention, apart from models, two or four designers from Malawi are also anticipated to participate at the SAFC and confirming to Thembi, who is a coordinator in the country, the selection of designers will be done this week.
