Andaman and Nicobar islands - A Piece of emerald

Andaman & Nicobar Islands puts up an affluence of brilliant beauty. These islands are roofed with dense forests, infinite unusual flowers and birds create an extremely graceful and romantic ambiance. Andaman & Nicobar Islands are also known as Kalapani-Black Waters as for their role as a feared penal settlement.

It is deliberated as a paradise for nature lovers and is an idyllic place for those who want to feel the silence of nature. It consists of a group of attractive islands varying from big to small and inhabited to uninhabited. There are a total of 572 islands lying in the South Eastern Part of the Bay of Bengal.

The Andaman & Nicobar Islands though fit in to India but is geographically nearer to South Asia. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands has a widespread bird area with a diversity of 270 species and sub-species of birds accessible in these islands.

The Andaman Wood Pigeon, Andaman Padauk and Dugong are declared as State Bird, State Tree and State Animal respectively. There are about 96 Wildlife Sanctuaries, nine National Parks and one Biosphere Reserve in the islands. Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park is the best known sanctuary. Port Blair is the capital and gateway to the islands which lies in South Andaman Island and falls under South Andaman District.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands not only includes beautiful beaches but also houses many historic monuments and museums. Havelock Island, Ross Island, Viper Island, Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park are the attractive tourist places to explore.

Ross Island

The Ross Island is situated at the entrance of Port Blair Harbor and is the most famous of all the thread of islands in the Andaman & Nicobar group. The island was considered as a figure of power and was named after the British evaluator Reginald Ross. It depicts a proficient management of British government. The island comprises of old buildings like hospitals, bakery and government officers houses which reminds of the old British administration. A museum is was built by the Navy known as “Smritika” describing the history of the island.

Havelock Island

It is considered vas one of the finest tourist spot to holiday in Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The island’s magnetism is by virtue of the beautiful virgin beach and the unpolluted environment. The most accessible island from the capital is the Havelock Island. The island can be reached through small boats which can be hired from Phoenix Bay Harbor. Crystal clear blue water is the jewel of the Havelock Island.
